Colts Unveil State-of-the-Art Matrix Helix Turf at Lucas Oil Stadium
A Commitment to Player Safety and Performance Drives the Colts' Latest Upgrade

The Indianapolis Colts are taking the field on a brand-new, cutting-edge Matrix Helix® turf system at Lucas Oil Stadium. Designed for maximum safety and performance, the new surface includes an organic infill and advanced shock pad—a combination that prioritizes player well-being while delivering top-tier playability.

The upgrade comes after the National Football League recommended replacing the previous slit-film field due to safety concerns. The Colts turned to Hellas, the Official Turf Partner of the team, to execute the installation, and the company exceeded expectations by completing the project in just 12 days. This rapid turnaround was especially impressive given the stadium's packed schedule, which included hosting Olympic Trial swimming and Big 10 Media Days.
"The decision to install new turf at Lucas Oil Stadium was made with a focus on player safety and performance," said Pete Ward, Chief Operating Officer of the Indianapolis Colts. "The Matrix Helix turf designed by Hellas provided the best option for our team and facility. We appreciate Hellas' dedication throughout the installation process and are thrilled with the result."
The Colts' new field features Hellas' industry-leading Matrix Helix monofilament fiber, known for its durability and stable footing that enhances cleat interaction. The Helix technology’s curled fibers lock infill in place, preventing movement and splash-out, while the addition of the Cushdrain® shock pad improves shock absorption and reduces injury risk. The Geo Coolfill® infill, a 100% organic material, further enhances player experience by improving energy restitution, foot control, and lowering field temperatures by up to 40°.
Hellas, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has solidified its reputation as the go-to provider for elite sports surfaces. The company has installed its Matrix Helix turf at 17 NFL facilities, including SoFi Stadium, Allegiant Stadium, and the home fields and practice facilities of teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Green Bay Packers. In addition to the Colts’ project, Hellas is expanding its footprint in Indiana with installations at Michigan City High School and Salem High School. The company will also once again install Matrix Helix turf at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London as part of the NFL London series.
With a rich history in professional football, the Indianapolis Colts have long been committed to excellence both on and off the field. The team's investment in cutting-edge playing surfaces reflects its dedication to player safety and top-tier performance, ensuring that Lucas Oil Stadium remains one of the premier venues in the NFL.
